Monster Needs One More portrays a monster-child's day that starts with one breakfast donut--but he wants more!-- leading consecutively (1 through 10) to 4+1 apples, 6+1 crackers, and, finally, 9+1 goodnight kisses. But is that all? Nope! Other little monsters want one more "another." One big hug from his mom-monster is just enough and all he needs to end the day. Perfect sequel to Monster, Be Good!
Another adorable picture book from Natalie Marshall that can easily be seen as a sequel to Monster, Be Good! In this book, instead of children learning how to get their own monsters to behave, they learn a little bit about counting and simple addition. As the day goes by for Monster he keeps thinking of needing one more of something, from one more cookie to one more kiss goodnight.
The artwork in this picture book is as cute as the previous one, with the vibrant monsters that fill the pages. The only downside is that a lot of the monsters asking for one more gives them a greedy, selfish side. It’s one thing to ask for another cookie because you’re hungry, but there are grouchy and sad monsters who only cheer up when they get that one more. So while this book advocates counting, the greedy behavior is a little bit annoying and now what I was expecting to find.
All the same, my son enjoyed this book a lot, and he loved the ending when the little monster wanted one more kiss from his mom, and one big hug (and maybe one more…). It was a cute book to read, and it suits that 2-6 age range really well.
